Muslin silk is woven from the premium variety of silk that grows in Bengal only. Sarees woven in muslin silk originated in Dhaka and became famous during the Mughal age. The first known reference to muslin silk fabric was made by Chanakya in his book Arthashastra in the 4th century B.C. When India was controlled by the Mughal rule, the muslin fabric from Dhaka received great appreciation as a sign of royalty and nobility.
