Pochampally Ikkat Silk Sarees

The term "Ikkat" refers to the dyeing technique used to create designs on the fabric. This is a resist dyeing process and requires more skill in execution since the yarns are dyed before being woven into cloth. In most other resist-dyeing techniques, e.g. batik, the final cloth rather than the yarn is dyed. The 3 major types of ikkat weaving techniques are - warp ikkat, weft ikkat and double ikkat. The most complicated of these 3 is the double ikkat where both the warp and weft threads are dyed prior to weaved which requires advanced skill , technique and time.

Pochampally Ikkat derives its name from the area in where it is woven – Pochampally in Telangana. The technique involving tying and dyeing of pattern in the yarn stage, and historically sees its roots in Indonesia, Japan and even some parts of Europe, was initially woven in Chirala. Abstract and geometric motifs are usually found in Pochampally Ikkat. Cotton, cotton-silk and silks are used in weaving at Pochampally .
